Smashphone is built on work that other people chose to share. This page names it: the motion capture behind the players’ strokes, the player character, the table tennis park, and the software inside the app. It covers Smashphone 1.5.0 for iPhone and Apple Watch.

Where a licence asks for its copyright notice or its full text to travel with the work, you will find it under Licence texts.

1. Player Motion

Tennis-MoCap: “A tennis action dataset: competitive performance of Caldas-Colombia tennis players”, github.com/jdpulgarin/Tennis-MoCap. Maintainer: Juan Diego Pulgarin-Giraldo (Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, Colombia). Contributors: Sergio Garcia-Vega, Luis Gerardo Melo-Betancourt, Santiago Ramos-Bermudez, Andres Marino Alvarez-Meza and German Castellanos. Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0).

Progress in Pattern Recognition, Image Analysis, Computer Vision, and Applications, 309–317. doi:10.1007/978-3-319-52277-7_38

Smashphone uses 108 strokes from Tennis-MoCap across all four racket sports. What we changed: each clip is one stroke cut from a recorded take, retargeted from the dataset’s skeleton onto our player, with the moment the racket meets the ball marked. In the game the clips are blended and adjusted live, for example to reach the ball.

MultiSenseBadminton: Seong M., Kim G., Yeo D., Kang Y., Yang H., DelPreto J., Matusik W., Rus D., Kim S. (2024). MultiSenseBadminton: Wearable Sensor–Based Biomechanical Dataset for Evaluation of Badminton Performance. Scientific Data, 11. doi:10.1038/s41597-024-03144-z. Dedicated to the public domain under CC0 1.0. Smashphone uses 18 strokes from it, mostly in badminton. CC0 asks for no credit; we give it gladly.

2. Player Character

Microsoft Rocketbox Avatar Library, github.com/microsoft/Microsoft-Rocketbox, MIT License, Copyright (c) 2020 Microsoft. The players are the Sports_Male_04 character, with the head and skin tone taken from Male_Adult_10. We added forearm twist bones, closed the hands round the grip and recolour the vest for each side.

3. Table Tennis Park

Everything in the park is CC0, which asks for no credit. We credit it anyway:

The trees were grown with ez-tree by Daniel Greenheck (MIT License). Only the geometry it generated ships in the app, not the tool itself.

4. Software in the App

5. Licence Texts

Creative Commons. Tennis-MoCap and the clips adapted from it: CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported, legal code. MultiSenseBadminton, Poly Haven, ambientCG and freesound 563547: CC0 1.0 Universal, legal code.
